How is Nitrogen Generated?

Nitrogen generation systems extract nitrogen molecules from atmospheric air by separating them from other gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. The two primary technologies used for this process are Membrane Separation and Pressure Swing Adsorption.

Pressure Swing Adsorption

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) nitrogen generators utilize a twin-tower system filled with Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) to selectively separate nitrogen from the ambient air. As compressed air flows through one tower, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases are adsorbed, allowing only nitrogen to pass through.

Meanwhile, the second tower regenerates by releasing the un-wanted adsorbed gases back into atmosphere at low pressure. The process then “swings” between the towers, delivering a continuous supply of nitrogen at the desired purity level.

Membrane Separation

Membrane separation nitrogen generators channel compressed atmospheric air through semi-permeable membranes, allowing smaller molecules, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, to pass through while retaining larger nitrogen molecules.

A pressure differential between the membrane’s inner and outer surfaces then drives the collection of high-purity nitrogen as compressed gas. This process is efficient, with minimal moving parts, relatively low maintenance requirements, and provides a reliable source of nitrogen for various applications.
